Surat Also known as the ancient city of Suryapur, apart from being India’s primary natural port during the Mughal period, is today, both the administrative commercial capital of the Indian state of Gujarat. One of the fastest growing cities in the capital of Surat district, this beautiful city is situated on the banks of the Tapti River (Tapi), with a moat that divides the older parts of the city with its congested and narrow streets from the more recent suburbs.

Acknowledged all over the world for its textile and diamond businesses, the city is popularly known as the ‘diamond capital of the world’ because 92% of the world's diamonds are cut and polished in Surat. It is also called the textile capital of India for the abundance of textile mills spread out in the city. No wonder it’s the only city that has one of the highest GDP growth rates of 11.5%. Known for its commitment towards education, the schools in Surat are either municipal schools, run by the Surat Municipal Corporation or private schools. There are a few private schools in Surat that are not as such backed by any Trust and which receive a financial aid from the government.

Most of the schools in Surat are either affiliated to the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSEB) or the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) while the rest of the schools are affiliated under National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). Under the 10+2+3 scheme of education the students attend primary and secondary school during the first ten years and then may complete two years of higher secondary education, followed by three years at college for commerce, arts or science. All the schools in Surat follow either Gujarati or English as the medium of instruction. Surat also has a number of public schools that are managed by the government and lack many facilities. However these schools are looked upon as a boon by the poorer residents who can’t afford the more expensive private schools.

Most of the localities prefer the private schools for the infrastructure, facilities and for the fact that English is used as a medium of instruction. Some of the best schools in Surat are Essar International School, Ryan International School, G.D. Goenka International School and J.H. Ambani Saraswati Vidyamandir. Surat is now home to the prestigious institute, "Educationam" a professional institute for primary and higher secondary education where the students eventually specialize in Chartered Accountancy with a college on campus.
