It was the year 1977 when St. Sophia's Senior Secondary School began with very humble beginnings in a small area of land in Kirti Nagar. Recognized by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the school has seen rapid progress in the growth of its infrastructure since then. In the year 1980 the school built its middle school level followed closely by the building of the Secondary school block in the year 1982-83 and finally the Senior Secondary Level built in 1987-88. In short, the school as it stands today actually took a span of ten years to build. Progress seems to be the keyword of the school especially if it’s named after St. Sophia, the "mother of the orphans".

It was thought that the school should be built quickly to embrace and give shelter to as many children as possible. According to history, Sophia was a woman with immense beauty and intelligence. After she married, she was blessed with six children, all of whom she loved deeply. In turn each of them showed the religious fervor their mother possessed. Sophia was barely thirty-four a plague swept over the entire land and her happiness turned to deep sadness as she helplessly watched each of her children die one by one. Finally her husband died. She wanted to die too but in a moment of divine revelation, committed her life to the glory of Jesus Christ.

She returned to her empty house and decided to serve God by opening it to the underprivileged or orphaned children. Today, Sophia School still keeps its doors open to children from all walks of life without any discrimination.
