The Central Board of Secondary Education is back with a bang and this time it’s under the spotlight for quite a different reason. Just when schools across the country are taking innovative measures to transform education into a pleasurable activity, the latest attempt has been a drive to reduce the bag-burden on primary school children. CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi had very recently sent a circular to all the primary schools in Delhi affiliated to the Board to lighten the children’s schoolbags. Schools have been instructed by the board to maintain the children’s schoolbags till Class II. This is a measure taken to ensure children are not overloaded carrying unnecessary books to school everyday. A suggestion made by the Advisory in this regard is that the number of textbooks prescribed for any class should be within those prescribed by the NCERT so that the students and parents are not burdened in any way. In contrast, while the urban schools are focusing on lightening the schoolbag, NGO’s are cashing in on the opportunity of providing rural a children with used school bags as part of a practical and cost effective literacy drive conducted by School to School' (S2S) to experience schooling. However, in all this chaos, there are a number of private schools that follow their own curriculum and do not follow NCERT books in the primary classes. Parents have often complained against the reference book that teachers prescribe that are carried by children everyday. Poonam Kaur, a teacher, said it would take schools and parents some time to reach a consensus on the existing education system, while DPI (S) Samwartak Singh said making schools bag-free was in the process of becoming a reality in Chandigarh.
